AJAX is an acronym that was introduced by Jesse James Garrett of Adaptive Path in February 2005. It stands for "Asynchronous JavaScript and XML". To start with the most confusing bits:

  • Ajax does not have to be asynchronous;

and

  • There is no need to use XML (but it is pretty convenient to do so).

However, you definitely need JavaScript. Other components you definitely need are (X)HTML, the Document Object Model (DOM) and Cascading Style Sheets(CSS). Ajax is not a technology, but a term that groups a number of technologies.

The significance of Ajax is that the technology allows developers to create desktop quality software applications for the web with a zero-footprint.

Future Proof Software have specialized in creating web frontends based on Ajax connecting to OpenEdge backends based on Progress technology.
